On March 5, 2013, Wing Commander: New Horizon MUSH was shut down due to lack of activity. Thanks to the staff and players for your support. We had a good run and created some amazing memories. Keep in touch on the Facebook page for the game, which will be preserved.
The entire game's codebase and database (minus player information) has been open-sourced and released to the public, and the game itself is back up to help support the code at wcmush.com 2199!
"Good evening. I'm Doug Ardsox, and this is your 11 o'clock nightly news. We begin with a breaking story. Karl Von Sprechen, the aging CEO of Von Sprechen Industries, has issued an exceedingly rare public statement on behalf of the Enigma Sector Consortium. The statement was provided to ESNN only as an audio recording..."
"Citizens of the Enigma Sector, I bid you good day. First and foremost, I must express my most sincere condolences to those who have lost so much due to the Pembroke crisis we have faced in these last few weeks. I commend those brave citizens who have risen to the challenge. They have risked their own safety for the sake of their fellow citizens, and there is no reward that I or the Consortium could possibly offer that would be worthy of such selflessness."
"That being said, we have not failed to notice the recent and severe criticism that has been leveled on the Consortium as a result of these unfortunate circumstances. We are not angry, though. We cannot fault our citizens for seeking retribution in these trying times. On the contrary, the Consortium will gladly accept this blame for the sake of its citizens, as we have so many times before."
"You see, I am an old man. I have lived a very long time, and I remember a great many things that others have forgotten. I remember the dark days, when the greatest cities of Earth lay in ruin as a result of a generations-long war. Billions died, and they were the lucky ones. The rest of us were left to wonder as to how long it would take a rebuilt Kilrathi Empire to find and enslave us."
"I remember groups of refugees - not unlike those from Pembroke - huddling together on Vespus, desperately seeking a new life to replace that which had been taken from them by the merciless Empire. I and my fellow board members saw this, and we could not stand to ignore it. We had neither the ability nor the infrastructure, but we did what we could to provide the means for rebuilding a human civilization that had been all but destroyed in the war."
"We have come so far in these last few decades, but the threats of old still remain. I can do naught but apologize for the Consortium's distinct lack of action in the Pembroke System these last few weeks. I can only ask for forgiveness, and tell you that the reason for our absence has been because the whole of our security forces are currently dedicated to protecting our outermost borders."
"Yes, my fellow citizens. Our worst fears have been realized. While humanity has done its best to rebuild here in the Enigma Sector, so too has the Kilrathi Empire been hard at work in some remote sector of the galaxy. At first, we thought it was simply rogue bands of fragmented Empire remnants raiding our borders. But the attacks have grown more severe in recent months, leading us to conclude that these so-called Kilrathi pirates have begun to join forces. They seek to restore some perverted sense of 'honor' by conquering what remains of our species."
"Well, I promise you, we will not allow it. Whatever it takes, the Consortium will rise to the challenge. We will protect you. Humanity's history is wrought with tales of triumph over unfathomable odds. We will do whatever it takes to ensure your safety, regardless of the threat. Whether it be petty terrorists who seek to make some misguided statement, or a new Kilrathi Empire with designs of galactic conquest, the Consortium will persist. I promise you, humanity will thrive. Thank you, and good night."
